Frequently Asked Questions

Ford LED headlights are complete replacement housings with LED projectors, LED DRLs, and usually updated turn signals. Judge them on the beam they put on the road, whether they fit your exact truck, and whether they're street legal.

Check The Beam Pattern And Light Distribution

Look at the projector layout. The Morimoto XB LED for 2020-2022 Super Duty runs four Bi-LED projectors, giving four low beams and four high beams for wide, even coverage. The Morimoto XB LED for 2018-2020 F-150 uses four low-beam projectors with dual Bi-LED high beams.

Match The Headlights To Your Ford Model And Trim

Same model year doesn't always mean same headlight. The 2018-2020 F-150 Morimoto XB LED doesn't fit the Raptor, which has its own Morimoto 2017-2020 Raptor XB LED. The AlphaRex NOVA-Series for 2021-2025 Bronco fits the 2022-2025 Bronco Raptor too, but not the Bronco Sport. For a model-specific option, see our Ford Bronco Headlights Form Lighting guide.

Compare Output, Optics, And Road-Legal Specifications

Check for stated DOT, SAE, and FMVSS108 compliance, especially if your Ford spends most nights on public roads. Morimoto lists its F-150 XB headlights, like the 2021+ XB Hybrid, as meeting all three. Some upgrades are not, like Morimoto's Supercharged Drivers for select XB Evo headlights, which add 30-50% output but are for off-road use only.

Aftermarket headlights make sense when your factory lights no longer match how you drive. That's often the case on older trucks with halogens, or newer trucks where you want better optics and features than the base package offers.

The gains can be large. The Morimoto 2018-2020 F-150 XB LED is rated at 200% more light output than the factory halogen setup, installs plug-and-play with no modifications, and carries a 5-year limited warranty. On older trucks, the AlphaRex NOVA-Series for 1992-1996 F-Series and Bronco brings 4th-gen Super Duty styling to OBS trucks, with Ice Cube 3D projectors and a switchback LED tube DRL.

Prioritize verified fitment and beam performance first. Styling should be the tiebreaker, not the deciding factor.

Work through it in order: year, model, and trim first, then your factory headlight type, then the install. That sequence rules out the wrong parts before you compare features.

Start With Year, Model, And Trim Compatibility

Match your truck to the listing's exact range. On the F-150, Morimoto builds separate XB headlights for 2009-2014, 2018-2020, and 2021+ trucks. The 2009-2014 version also fits factory HID trucks. For Raptor-specific options, see our Guide to Morimoto XB Evo Hybrid Headlights for the Ford F-150 SVT Raptor.

Check Factory Lighting And Connector Requirements

Your factory headlight type often decides which harness you need:

  • 2021+ F-150: The Morimoto XB LED is plug-and-play on halogen trucks, needs the LF498H adapter on LED reflector trucks, and isn't compatible with factory dual-LED projector trucks.
  • 2020-2022 Super Duty: The Morimoto XB LED requires the optional OEM LED adapter on trucks with factory LED headlights.
  • 2017-2019 Super Duty: Morimoto's XB Evo headlights work with both factory halogen and factory LED trucks.

Review Installation Requirements Before Ordering

Check what's in the box and what the install takes. Most Morimoto Ford headlights we carry ship with a plug-and-play harness and fuse tap, so the swap needs no splicing. Optional adapters, like the F-150's LF498H or the Super Duty's OEM LED adapter, are sold separately, so add them to your order up front if your truck needs one.

A projector focuses light through a lens and uses a shield to form a sharp cutoff. The result is a controlled low beam that puts more light on the road and less in oncoming drivers' eyes than most reflector housings.

Projector layouts vary a lot across Ford headlights, and that changes how wide and even the beam is:

  • Four Bi-LED projectors: Morimoto XB LED for 2020-2022 Super Duty (four low beams and four high beams).
  • Four low-beam projectors plus dual Bi-LED high beams: Morimoto XB LED for 2018-2020 F-150.
  • Four Ice Cube 3D projectors: AlphaRex NOVA-Series for 2021-2025 Bronco and 2022-2025 Bronco Raptor.
  • Dual halogen projectors: AlphaRex PRO-Series for 2018-2020 F-150, a budget-friendly way to get the 14th-gen look.

More projectors usually means wider, more even coverage. Still, compare the stated compliance and the low- and high-beam coverage, not just the projector count.

Start with your platform, then pick the optic and feature set that fits how you drive.

F-150

Raptor

Super Duty (F-250, F-350, F-450, F-550)

  • Morimoto XB LED, 2020-2022: Four Bi-LED projectors, a Y-shaped DRL, and full sequential turn signals, installed plug-and-play. Factory LED trucks need the optional OEM LED adapter.
  • Morimoto XB Evo, 2017-2019: Works with both factory halogen and factory LED trucks and is DOT, SAE, and FMVSS108 compliant. See our Morimoto XB Evo LED Headlights Buyer's Guide.

Bronco

1992-1996 OBS F-Series and Bronco

An upgrade is worth it when your current lights can't keep up with the roads you drive at night. That's most often true on halogen-equipped trucks, older trucks with worn housings, and trucks that regularly run dark rural roads or trails.

A street-focused truck gets the most from a compliant, plug-and-play assembly like the Morimoto F-150 or Super Duty XB LED. A truck that splits time between highway and trail can pair compliant headlights with off-road auxiliary lights for trail use. For foggy or rainy conditions, the Morimoto XB Evo Fog Lights for 2015-2017 F-150 add road-legal low light. Morimoto calls the Evo+ version the only dual-color fog light that's SAE compliant in both colors.
