Frequently Asked Questions
Start with three facts about your truck: its generation, its factory headlight type, and its cab and bed configuration. Nearly every F-150 part in our catalog is built around one or more of them.
Know Your F-150 Generation
F-150 parts are almost always generation-specific. You'll see our listings split into the 10th gen (1997-2003, plus the 2004 Heritage), the 12th gen (2009-2014), the 13th gen (2015-2020, with a front-end refresh for 2018-2020), and the 14th gen (2021+). Morimoto, for example, builds separate XB LED headlights for 2009-2014, 2018-2020, and 2021+ trucks, and they don't cross over. Ford also refreshed the front end for 2024, so confirm the listed years cover your truck before ordering.
Identify Your Factory Headlight Type
On 14th-gen trucks, the factory headlight package matters as much as the model year. The Morimoto 2021+ XB LED Headlights are plug-and-play on halogen trucks, require the optional LF498H adapter harness on LED reflector trucks, and aren't compatible with trucks that have factory dual-LED projector headlights. The AlphaRex LUXX-Series for 2021-2023 follows similar logic: no converter on halogen trucks, a converter required on LED reflector and LED projector trucks. Same truck, three different wiring scenarios.
Check Cab Style, Roof, And Bed Length
Racks and bed covers are built around exact dimensions. The CBI OffRoad Cab Height Bed Rack is designed for 2004-2022 F-150 and Raptor trucks with the 5'6" bed. The BAKFlip MX4 listed here fits 2021+ trucks with the 6.5' bed. The Sherpa Equipment Company Storm roof rack fits 2021-2023 F-150 and Raptor SuperCrew cabs only, and it won't fit trucks with the full sunroof and a front-mounted antenna.
For most F-150 trail builds, the first real gains come from lighting you can aim where the trail actually goes, mounted on hardware that won't rattle loose. Wide-angle pods at the A-pillars light up corners and trail edges that the headlights miss, while roof- or bumper-mounted pods extend reach down the trail.
For pod mounting, Morimoto 1Banger Top Mount Brackets are laser-cut from 304 stainless steel, powder coated, and let pods hang from a roof rack or steel bumper with swivel adjustment for aim. They carry a lifetime limited warranty. If you already run ditch lights, Cali Raised LED Ditch Light Bracket Extensions are CNC-cut, low-profile add-ons that give you room for a second set of pods, an antenna, or a GoPro.
Raptor owners have a direct-fit option up front. The Morimoto XB LED Grille Lights for the 2010-2021 Raptor come as a set of three with Osram LEDs, a UV-coated polycarbonate lens, and a plug-and-play harness, backed by a 2-year limited warranty. See the full Ford Raptor collection for more Raptor-specific parts.
On older trucks, the Brite Box Fogster is a simple wiring module that keeps your low beams and/or fog lights on when the high beams are activated, so all of your factory lighting works together on dark back roads. It's listed for F-150s from 1997 through 2016-2019 trucks with factory halogen headlights.
They are when they fix something you deal with every day: dim headlights, an open bed, or a front end that looks dated. Three upgrades in our F-150 catalog are built with daily use in mind.
Headlights that outperform factory halogens. The Morimoto XB LED Headlights for 2018-2020 F-150 are rated at 200% more light output than the factory halogen setup. They use Kuria Quad Optics with four low-beam projectors and dual Bi-LED high beams, install plug-and-play with no modifications, and carry a 5-year limited warranty. Note that this version doesn't fit the Raptor.
A covered, organized bed. The BAKFlip MX4 6.5' Bed Cover is a folding hard cover with heavy-duty aluminum matte-finish panels built for UV and scratch resistance over a premium-density foam core. It's listed for 2021-2026 XL, XLT, Lariat, King Ranch, Platinum, and SSV trucks, plus 2024-2026 STX, with the 6.5' bed.
Custom DRLs without losing a factory look. The ORACLE Lighting ColorSHIFT RGB+W Headlight DRL Upgrade Kit replaces the DRL boards in 2021-2023 F-150 Platinum, Limited, and Tremor trucks with factory LED projector headlights. It includes a true white DRL option, so you can run color at a show and keep a clean white DRL on the commute.
Compare the optics first, then confirm fitment against your exact factory lighting package. Lumen claims tell you less than how the projector or reflector shapes the beam.
Compare Beam Pattern And Optics
Morimoto offers three tiers for the 2018-2020 F-150, and the difference comes down to the light source behind each beam:
- XB LED: Four LED low-beam projectors (Kuria Quad Optics) with dual Bi-LED high beams. This is the top tier, and it doesn't fit the Raptor.
- XB Hybrid: A wide LED low-beam projector plus a dedicated LED high-beam projector. It mixes LED and incandescent bulbs to bring the price down.
- XB Hybrid-R: LED reflectors for both low and high beams. It meets DOT, SAE, and FMVSS108 standards.
All three use Morimoto's OEM-grade housings and plug-and-play harnesses with a 5-year limited warranty. For a deeper dive, see our Guide to Morimoto XB Evo Hybrid Headlights for the Ford F-150 SVT Raptor.
Evaluate Headlight Fitment And Installation
Headlamp performance can also depend on mounting position, optical alignment, and compatibility with the vehicle’s electrical system. Check the listed model years, trim exclusions, connectors, included hardware, and installation requirements before ordering replacement assemblies. This review is particularly important when factory lighting configurations differ because a visually similar component may require different electrical provisions or mounting details.
Consider Rear Visibility And Signaling
Rear-lighting performance depends partly on signal visibility and the ability of other road users to recognize vehicle intentions. F-150 owners researching complete rear-lighting changes can consult Morimoto Ford F 150 XB LED Tail Lights the Ultimate Upgrade for Your Truck while comparing compatible options and installation considerations. Look at signaling function, housing construction, fitment, and integration with the truck’s existing electrical configuration.
The best builds treat parts as a system, not a pile of separate purchases. Matching components from the start saves you from mismatched DRL colors, wheel fitment surprises, and rewiring later.
- Front-end lighting that matches. The Morimoto XBG LED DRL Grille Inserts for 2021+ F-150 add Osram LED DRLs to the grille and are plug-and-play on trucks with halogen or factory LED headlamps (Raptor excluded). Morimoto guarantees an optical and color-temperature match with its LF498-series XB LED headlights in white or amber, so planning both together gets you a front end that reads as one design.
- Wheels sized for the truck. The Method MR701 for F-150 comes in matte black as a 17x8.5 with 0mm offset and an 18x9 with +18mm offset, both in the F-150's 6x135 bolt pattern with an 87mm center bore. Offset and tire size affect clearance, so check both against your suspension and tire plans; some setups may need minor modification. Browse every brand we carry in the wheels collection.
- Stage the build. Start with what you use most, often headlights or a bed cover, then add racks and auxiliary lighting as your trips get longer. Every added part counts against payload, so plan the full setup before you order the heavy pieces.
Headlights change both the look and the nighttime performance of an F-150, and the right pick comes down to your generation and factory lighting. Here's where to start for each:
- 2009-2014 (12th gen): Morimoto XB LED Headlights, Amber DRL. Fits factory HID trucks too, with a plug-and-play harness, fuse tap, and 5-year limited warranty. Canadian trucks may need the OE DRL disabled.
